Technology Foresight and Digital Economy Deputyship

The Technology Foresight and Digital Economy Deputyship (TFDE) conducts analytical studies and research across multiple fields in technology and digital economy. It also monitors and analyzes key current developments and future forecasts on emerging and modern technologies to anticipate their future and potential economic impacts. The deputyship aims to support decision-makers by providing comprehensive data and information about the ICT sector and its current and future developments.

Establishment of TFDE

The deputyship was initially established in 2020 under the name "Technology Foresight Center," as part of the MCIT’s efforts to enhance research and studies in modern and future technologies and their economic and social impacts. Later, its scope was expanded, and it was renamed the " Technology Foresight and Digital Economy Deputyship" to include in-depth technical and economic research across various sectors. The deputyship continuously seeks out the latest emerging topics and areas in the sector to be proactive in studying, analyzing, and collecting information on such developments.

TFDE Objectives

  • Supporting knowledge-based decision making by providing necessary data, information, insights, and recommendations in the fields of emerging and future technologies to foster digital economy
  • Enriching knowledge about topics related to future technologies and digital economy by conducting periodic reports and activities.
  • Steering the adoption of emerging and future technologies by scanning the latest developments and trends and assessing their impact on various economic sectors.
  • Contributing to the sustained development of plans, strategies, and policies concerning digital economy by offering insights, recommendations, and assessing the anticipated economic impacts.

TDFE Activities

  • Preparing foresight reports to study and analyze current trends and future expectations in highly significant areas, offering analyses of potential future developments and their impacts, and providing suggestions and recommendations on how best to engage with emerging and modern technologies.
  • Producing analytical economic reports to explore digital economy topics, development mechanisms, and impact assessments, as well as reports on enhancing the efficiency of national sectors through the use of modern and emerging technologies.
  • Overseeing the organization of the "Technology Foresight and Digital Economy Research Award" for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
  • Developing the “Arqamak” platform, which includes key indicators for the telecommunications and IT sector. “Arqamak” offers a comprehensive set of indicators covering areas related to the telecommunications, IT sector, and digital economy.
  • Responding to technology and economic consultation requests and data requests from administrative units within the ministry.
